This post is one in a series of posts called “Glimpses of God” which I am writing as part of the Write31Days blog challenge. You can find the other posts here: 31 Glimpses of God Blog Challenge (#write31days)
“Why can’t I be taller? Will I ever grow?”
My sweet eight year old daughter had her check-up yesterday and was lamenting her small stature. According to her, her big brother is a giant and she is a shrimp. Her dad is very tall, and I’m not exactly short, but God has given our precious little girl a smaller frame. However, yesterday as her growth chart confirmed her placement on the ‘growth curve’, she vented her frustration.
As I sat there trying to reassure her that she is just the right size, that God made her a certain way and He loves her, and that great things often come in smaller packages, I saw a glimpse of the way our Father sees us.
How many times do I lament something that I can’t change about myself? There are physical traits that I still find hard to accept, as well as personality traits, and health issues. So often I wish I was different. Other times I think maybe God let something fall through the cracks (as if that was possible!). And then there are the days when I just become bitter party of one because I want things to be different.
But yesterday as I sat in the doctor’s office with my perfectly proportioned yet sulking little girl, I realized that while I see my daughter as just the right size (especially for snuggling!), she has a hard time seeing herself that way. She so often chooses to focus on what she doesn’t have, instead of what she does. But that is me too!
I often default to seeing what I am not, what I have not, and what I cannot. All the while my Heavenly Father looks at me and sees His blood-bought baby girl, the apple of His eye, and He rejoices over me with singing! (see 1 Peter 1:18-19, Psalm 17:8, Zephaniah 3:17)
God does not make any mistakes! He created us in His image, and He loves us more than we can ever imagine.
There are of course things about ourselves that we can and should allow the Holy Spirit to change so that we can be more like Jesus. But yet there are other things, God given things, that we need to embrace instead of lament.
God may have made you more introverted, or extroverted, than you would like. He may have given you a larger frame than you would have asked for. You may be taller, shorter, or more average than you would like. But my dear friend, take a moment – just a moment, and ask God to show you a glimpse of how He sees you.
Read the verses from above. I think when God’s children better understand how He sees us we will be blown away!
God loves you; just as you are. He sent His Son to make a way for you to be with Him, and He will spend eternity rejoicing over you in song!
See you tomorrow,
Jen
